Chef Addie's Baking Birthday Party

i really do love birthday parties. i love the planning and the preparing (really, i do!); I love the celebrating & being with friends. it was made exponentially more fun this year because Addie was so excited about it! we tossed around the idea of a baking party last year, but i was still sick and pregnant; and there was no energy there. when i asked addie about it again this year, she immediately said no! so i asked her to hear me out...and by the time i was done explaining what we could do, she was hooked...and excited! Untitled-1c
and so we used fun colors and made a few visits to joann's with our coupons for every.single.thing.needed!
IMG_7957 there were chef hats and the girls made cupcake flowers to add to them.  IMG_7952-52 everyone got an apron with their name on it and a little added cuteness (that i had a lot of help from my mom creating!)  Untitled-2bafter we made chef hat flowers and took a picture (how cute are they?!?)
IMG_7993
the girls were split into two groups. one group put together a cookie recipe in a jar from here.
Untitled-3
i'd measured everything out into cups (so the recipe would actually work when they made it at home)!
Untitled-2 so they dumped and squished and may or may not have tasted a little brown sugar!
 Untitled-5
but none of which i could have done without a few very sweet and helpful mamas! Untitled-4 while the first group was making cookies in a jar, the other group went to the kitchen and kneaded their pizza dough and added ingredients to make their very own pizza! while the pizza's were finishing up, we played an undocumented taste testing game that involved things like flour and pickle relish and red peppers and parsley (and some hilariously funny faces!)!  Untitled-1d
after pizzas were cooked and consumed, we had birthday cake! Untitled-1 addie's never been a big fan of having happy birthday sung to her, and that hasn't changed! Untitled-1e but she still sat up and blew her candles out ;) Untitled-2c and then it was time to decorate their own cakes! Untitled-3d they realized it was a little more challenging than expected to ice an entire cake. those sides are tricky!Untitled-2e but once the outside icing was on, they took turns with colors and icing tips Untitled-6 and decorated some beautiful cakes! Untitled-5b full of color and sprinkles! Untitled-2fafter every cake was decorated, the girls ended up in our girl's room all on the top bunk! (and after i grabbed a picture, i made sure everyone got safely down!) IMG_8100
but what i loved most about this party was what each little girl so carefully brought for the Friendship Mission Women's Shelter. Totaling...18 sticks of deoderant. 5 (big!) bottles of lotion, 7 (big!) bottles of shampoo, and 15 (huge!) bottles of body wash. 17 toothbrushes and 32 tubes of toothpaste in addition to floss and mouthwash. Brushes and combs. Fingernail polish and manicure sets. Qtips and socks. 6 huge packages of napkins, 14 rolls of paper towels, and 270 paper plates! Addie went through each bag & looked at each item. Our prayer is that they will bless these women & children.
IMG_8102 i cannot believe this little girl is six already. i have no idea where the time has gone. i keep thinking i'm soaking up the minutes and hours and days...and they keep passing faster and faster. Untitled-3a I did a little flipagr@m video of Addie over the years. She first asked me why I had all of those pictures. The memories. Such sweet memories. And later that night on her birthday day as we talked on her bed, she told me it almost made her cry...tears of happiness.

We're so thankful for this big little person. Her love of others. Encouragement. Excitement. Loyalty. Passion (oh the passion!). Kindness. Precious child of God. Happy 6th Birthday Addieboo!

6 Months

i can't believe our little guy is 6 months old...and has been for almost 3 weeks now.
IMG_7574 it's been quite an adjustment (for me at least) going from three to four kids. some of it is our season of life and the dramatic changes in our normal of adding a baby to our family and starting a kindergartener in school in a week's time. some of it's because we have (for two more weeks!) four kids five and under. but we're finally feeling like we have a new normal. not a fully together normal; there's a lot of juggling that goes on, but we've shifted some (reasonable) responsibilities to the girls, and it's made a huge difference.

and there's grace. lots of grace that we have to show each other, and i have to show myself.

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12:9

He's such a joy.
IMG_7610 he adores his sisters more than anything. he can be in tears and they'll climb in the car and he stops to grin at them.
IMG_7566
he's rolling over front to back but still hasn't figured out back to front, which i'm completely fine with because it means he's still mostly in one place.
IMG_7596 he loves sitting up but can't quite do it on his own.
IMG_7604
he loves to blow raspberries and now does this when he doesn't like food or spits up. not pleasant i say.
IMG_7642-2 food. well, he's quite content with his milk. avocado was a bust and you can see what he thoughts of sweet potatoes:
we'll try again in a few weeks. he's certainly not hurting in the weight category though! he's a whopping 20lbs 5.5oz (90th%ile). my back and arms are feeling it since he can't hold on yet! he's not quite as crazy about the ergo as he use to be because he wants to see everything!

he's just started showing some preference to who he wants to hold him; and it's pretty sweet!.
IMG_7682-2
he loves his toys and everything goes in his mouth. everything. he doesn't have any teeth and isn't showing any signs of them yet. again, i'm just fine with that! the gummy bites still hurt even without the teeth!
IMG_7688 he loves to snuggle and rub his face on my shoulder. he's a tummy sleeper and has been for months (with the blessing of a doctor!). he takes great naps at home when we're here, but is just fine snoozing on the road when we're running errands or sitting in carpool line.

there are very few days that go by that i don't just stare in awe at this little miracle. not so much because he's perfect (although he is!); but because our God is so big. bigger than our plans. bigger than our fears. bigger than science. bigger than any limitation we could ever place on Him.

our little buddy is such a joy. a crazy miracle blessing. he's exhausting and energizing all at once. his giggles are contagious. and he's the perfect addition to our family.

happy (belated) six months little buddy.
months1-6
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
