Sleeping on the Couch

bIMG_6047
Addie's getting over some sort of virus combined with a few emerging eye teeth and 2 year molars.

She hasn't drooled like this since she was 6 months old.

She hasn't gotten up this early since she was 4 months old.

She hasn't slept like this since she was 2 months old.

She hasn't woken up this many times in one night since she was days old!

And she sure hasn't ever been this picky of an eater!

I think the three and a half hour nap she took today, part of which was on the couch, has to have remedied many of her ailments!

I hope...

Augusta

Paul, Addie, and I went to Augusta last weekend for a visit. I'm a little late on posting these though. By the time we got home, Addie had a fever and kept it through Monday. Great by Tuesday, except for a runny nose. And tonight, exactly a week later, after many tears and desperate pleas for cuddle time, I took her temperature again. Same low-grade temp. We're going to the doctor tomorrow!

Anyway...

...like everywhere else in the southeast, there was lots of rain! We'd spent the night at Addie's Grandpa's Friday night, where she immediately discovered the fish. She would take him by the finger and drag him into the other room to see the fish! It was too cute! Although I'm sure the fish tank has now been thoroughly windexed, I think her little fingerprints remained at least until we left ;) Besides the fish, she really enjoyed having Grandpa read to her. Check out that face in the bottom left picture...clearly she was making her elephant sound! :)

After the rain let up on Saturday, we headed out for lunch. I spent all of 2 minutes snapping a few pictures (literally, I checked the time stamps). I got lucky this time! I used these for her 18 month pictures, but I loved these two also. I think Grandpa will too!

We then headed to the Arts in the Heart of Augusta with Addie's Gramma to see one of their friends dance. Addie loved those dancers, but she loved the African dancers best of all. They had drums and danced faster and with more passion than anyone we'd ever seen! She was enthralled! But wow was it hot and humid! Too hot and humid for me to bother to take pictures of the dancers!
bIMG_5845
I took all of 5 pictures at the festival, because we spent most of our time chasing Addie!
bIMG_5848-2
I finally put my foot down after she almost rolled down a hill (which would have landed her on a sidewalk, not just at the bottom of a grassy area), and she could either: ride in the stroller, be held, or walk and hold hands! She chose to walk and hold Mama's hand, so there went the picture taking!

Sunday morning brought more rain, but Addie's Gramma's front porch is a perfect place to take pictures. It was early, so Gramma wasn't up to having pictures taken of her; but we'll do some of that when she visits us soon. I did get a few fun ones of Addie (because she had been up since 4am raring to go! by the time we got home, she had a fever; so that explained it).

Does she look like she's getting into mischief here or what...?!?!?
bIMG_5881

abIMG_5887eyes
She sat and sat on this step until I got in a place where I could take pictures. Then all she wanted to do was sit in my lap or break leaves off the plant. Oh well...
abIMG_5883eyes
I know she's mine, and I know I'm biased; but I sure do love these eyes!

Hope you had a great weekend!

Protection

I cannot be entirely sure what has caused our...
car AC compressor to go out,
microwave, ice maker, and vacuum cleaner to die or temporarily die,
bugs to invade our pantry or light fixtures to randomly fall,
chimney flashing to leak allowing water to go into our wall,
outside the house AC wiring to go bad,
dog Abbey to have a cancerous spot and require surgery,
bedroom TV to lose it's picture,
tire to blow,
sink to have a bad leak,
refrigerator to go out,
main sewer line to finally clog with roots and other objects to the point of backing up into our house,

our dog Mollie to require major surgery and lose her immediately after,
under the house part of our AC to need replacing, OR
second car to give out (9/09/08)
...all over the past year, besides just that life happens.

All of that is just stuff, but I am ready for it to stop!

I can, however, totally and completely, without question be sure that there were angels surrounding our baby girl when this very large, very heavy, glass container slipped from my hands:
bIMG_5986
She was standing in that tiny space between the two big pieces of glass, the bottom of the container that broke and had razor sharp edges, and the top. The only reason she cried was because it scared her. Not a scratch.
bIMG_5987
Thank you God for protecting our little angel!

For He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways...

18 Months

6 months. A year. 18 Months.

All of a sudden it's here! I remember thinking it was so far away! She'll be 2 before we know it!
addie18moscollage2
Addie's gone from being a baby to a toddler in what seems like overnight. I couldn't believe these pictures with her sitting on this bench, looking so big! Long legs! Huge feet. Never even tried to get off!

One minute she's stumbling and the next minute she's running!

One minute she's almost solely signing and the next minute I can't keep up with the words and phrases she says!

**Side note: I'm so thankful we worked with her on signing. We were discouraged by some, saying that studies have shown that it delayed language development. It saved us. It bridged that gap (and still does sometimes) where communication is needed but language hasn't developed due to age. We never used signs without words. So Addie always heard the word when she signed them. It worked for us. I guess that's what matters.**

One minute she's completely dependent on us for everything and the next minute she's a little helper: finding the remote, cleaning out the dishwasher by putting chunking the silverware in the drawer, putting clothes in the dryer, picking up toys/books and clapping after each one, and shutting anything and everything that might need to be shut (even though not at the time!).
addie18moscollage
She loves to:
...feed the dog. She tells her to sit, down (and points down and touches the floor), and wait! Helps me put the bowl down and then yells, "OK!"

...dust/wipe down everything. i'd love to take credit for that, you know, with all the cleaning i do! I have no idea where she gets it from, but it sure is cute!

...to rock. Rock in my old rocking chair. Rock on her blue rocking horse. Rock Rock!

...to look at pictures of herself, especially on the blog. She'll say, "Addie" every time she sees a picture of herself or a baby.

Her language has exploded, so much so that I know I've forgotten some words/phrases! Below is a list, more for my future benefit than anything! So don't feel obligated to read it! :)

I love our little girl. She makes us laugh and sometimes brings tears to my eyes. She's affectionate and sweet and gives the best kisses! She's wild, loud and energetic. She hates riding in the car and would much prefer to be running, swinging and sliding at the park. She sleeps like a baby and plays like a little girl. She can make a mess of a room and destroy a pile of folded laundry in 2 seconds flat. She can find and pick up most anything you ask. She's prissy and loves to wear her bracelet. She's obsessed with pointing out trucks and thinks firetrucks are the coolest things ever! She begs to go ow'side and yells anytime she sees a cat, dog or bird. Her curls are ringlets now and bounce when she runs. She knows how to fake cry, fake cough and thinks she can fake sneeze!

She's a complete joy, and we thank God ever day for the precious blessing He's loaned to us!

Now That's Service!!!

kia4
A few years ago, it was time for a new car for me. You know...the time when it costs more to fix your current car that it's worth.

We have a long time friendship with the owner/manager of Brewbaker Motors. Basically, with the exception of one car I drove in college, we've driven whatever they've sold. We ventured to another dealership at one point. Big mistake. We missed the customer service. We missed the personal service. And we missed the excellent car service!

So in 2007, we naturally went back to Brewbaker this go round again. They had just done a fruit-basket-turnover and moved from being a BMW, Buick, Dodge, Infiniti, Saturn dealership to a Dodge, Kia, Infiniti, Jeep/Chrysler dealership.

I was determined that I wanted a cute little Jeep. I was also determined that I would not be buying a Kia. I mean...a Kia? No way!

Now, there's nothing wrong with Jeeps, but it was not the car for me. I drove a Kia Sorento and I was hooked! Smooth. Drives like a car. Sits like an SUV. Good space. Decent (not great, mind you) gas mileage. Good service warranty. Sold!
kia2
(yeah, ours doesnt look this cool!)

Six months after Addie was born, Paul's car died. Again, way more money to fix it than it was worth!

We decided to become a one car family. We gave it a month. By mid October, it will have been a YEAR! It hasn't been without it's challenges; but with everything else that's quit, broken, exploded, imploded, and otherwise given up and died, I'm so thankful we don't have a second car payment!

So yesterday I get Addie loaded up to go get Paul from work. No problems. All of a sudden, I realize I'm really hot and stuffy. Not that that's unusual, but this was! I turn the AC off. Turn it back on. Hot, humid air. I change the temp, change the setting, turn it back off and on. Nothing but hot, humid air.

How on the earth did that happen in the 10 minutes I was in the car?

So today we pick up my mom's car from her at school, drop it at the dealership, take Paul to work, I go back to transfer the car seat and talk with the service manager.

And I get the call: the entire AC compressor has gone out! What? Oh...and by the way, the AC is covered up to 60,000 miles. We're at 63,500! I'm not kidding!

It's almost comical. But it's not!

So the service manager proceeds to tell me that she's called Kia and told them the situation, the mileage, the fact that we're longtime customers. They agree to pay for...get this...all the parts! (That's approximately $500 worth of parts!) The only thing we have to come up with is the labor, and the service manager cut those down too. Plus, we have a $200 service credit from Kia that's still good; and oh...by the way, that should cover it all except a routine oil change!

They are even loaning us a car until the parts come in the end of the week!

I have 3 words: God is good!

Oh...and we'll be buying another Kia when the time comes!

We're so excited that our dear friends Julie, John and Savannah have just moved from being over 8 hours away to being barely 1 hour away for a new job at the Kia plant.

Have I mentioned we like Kia?

In our dreams we are able to fly...

...and that is a remembering of how we were meant to be." - Madeleine L'Engle

I love children's books, and Madeleine L'Engle is one of my favorite authors. I can't wait to read her books to Addie.

When I found this quote, I just couldn't pass it up.

But this post isn't about children's books.

And it certainly isn't about quotes.

It's about flying.

And freezing the moment in time to capture it perfectly.

Or not...
if you're focused, but on the wrong thing...

or the expression that you portray isn't really how you feel...

or you'd really just prefer to blend into the background.

And then there are other times...
where there's focus...

but you've had enough and want off this ride called life already...

But when your focus is upward, your attitude is not only positive but full of joy, and you hold on tight...

...you realize that you're right where you not only need to be but desire to be!

but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29: 11
